Using
a Calendar

Abbie
Thom (Hands on English, November - December 2002) has a
great idea for keeping track of new vocabulary words and
making sure they are convenient for your student to find
and practice.
I
give my students a blank calendar each month.
We go over it at the beginning of the month, fill in in
the days of the week and the dates. We also put in birthdays
and holidays.
The rest of the space in each square is used for new vocabulary.
...The students write down any new words they want to remember.
I ask them to tell me what they have written.
...We review both the meaning and the context where they
are encountered.
At the end of the month, I ask them to choose words they
think are important.
Point
out holidays.
Some
are unique to the United States or celebrated differently
here.
Many
people new to the country find "green beer" and the Easter
Bunny just a little puzzling.
