Smoke Alarm Safety

Every home should have working smoke alarms. Some tips:

Most hardware stores carry smoke alarms. K-mart, Wal-mart, and Target do also. The price can range from $5 to $30.

Fire departments will provide smoke alarms for free if you cannot afford to buy one. Call your local fire department for more information.

Smoke alarms should be on every level of your home. All bedrooms should have a smoke alarm, and don't forget your basement!

Mount the smoke alarms on the ceilings or high on the wall.

Do NOT mount the smoke alarms near doors, windows, or ducts. The smoke alarms may not work right because of drafts.

Change the batteries once or twice a year.
Test each smoke alarm once a month.
Clean and replace smoke alarms as the directions on the box say.
