Welcome
to the United States - A Guide for New Immigrants
contains basic information that will help you settle in
the United States and find what you and your family need
for everyday life. It also summarizes important information
about your legal status and about agencies and organizations
that provide documents or essential
services you may need.
The "Welcome to the United States" CD-ROM is available on the Macomb County Library's government computer workstation. This publication
of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, is a companion piece
to the booklet available from the MLP office (in English or Spanish)
and in other languages online at http://uscis.gov. The guide is
directed at new permanent residents and contains practical
information to help immigrants settle into everyday life in the
United States, as well as basic civics information that introduces
residents to the U.S. system of government.

Please call Stella. Ask her to bring these things with her
from the store: Six spoons of fresh snow peas, five thick
slabs of blue cheese, and maybe a snack for her brother
Bob. We also need a small plastic snake and a big toy frog
for the kids. She can scoop these things into three red
bags, and we will go meet
her Wednesday at the train station.

Healthy Families
-Thanks to a Health Literacy Grant from the AMA (American
Medical Association) Foundation, MLP is able to provide
this vital health literacy information for tutors and students
through this web page. We also hope to build awareness among
local health practitioners of the barriers to quality health
care confronted by those who experience a lack of literacy
and English language skills.
